During the last American Idol Finals, there was a faceoff between a songbird and a beat-boxer. The songbird won, and Jordin Sparks became the next American Idol. The “loser” was Blake Lewis, and this is the review of his debut album, Audio Day Dream (A.D.D.).
A.D.D. may be the acronym of the Attention Deficit Disorder, but it may also be the cure, the reason simply being that when listening to this album, one will hardly be able to lose concentration. This is because A.D.D. is filled with tracks that will either blow your mind, or leave you wanting more, or even blow your mind and leave you wanting more. It showcases Blake’s ability as a beat-boxer, songwriter (he wrote 15 out of the 16 songs) and a singer.
This album is packed with techno jams, hip-hop beats, and soaring ballads. Lead single Break Anotha is a great example of what you can expect from this talented beat-boxer. If that doesn’t suit your ears, do not worry. There are many other tunes like the funky Gots To Get Her, the boy-band-ish End of The World, the 80’s inspired Here’s My Hello, or even the excellent 1000 Miles.
Blake’s beat-boxing isn’t irritating as it is scattered throughout the entire album, and it doesn’t feel draggy at all. Interlude B’Shorty Grabs Mic is the only beat-boxing track and it takes up barely 2 minutes. The intro and outro Silence is Golden but I Choose Noise, provide the perfect start and end to the album as it makes this album feel different from the rest (Justin Timberlake anyone?).All in all, this album is certainly one of the best this year, and it shows just how much you don’t have to win, to win.
