Once upon a time, Disney made animated movies about dragons, kings, queens, toys and bugs. Then they made live-action movies about pacifiers and princesses with diaries. Now, in 2007, these two worlds are brought together in an unearthly fashion in the movie Enchanted.
That’s right. Enchanted is a live-action + animated movie about a girl, Giselle, who lives in Andalasia waiting for her true love to arrive. And as always, there is also the wicked stepmother who is a queen and a witch (even then people held 2 jobs). In order to remain queen, she must stop her step-son Prince Edward from getting married. But one fateful day, he meets Giselle on one of his hunting trips and they decide to get married and live happily ever after.
On her wedding day which is the next day, Queen Narissa decides that she can only get rid of Giselle by removing her from Andalasia. As a result, she kicks Giselle into a magical portal and sends Giselle to hell, or rather, a New York City manhole. From there, Giselle meets Robert, and the adventure begins.
This comedy prompts several questions about love and life as both our world and the “ideal” fantasy world are compared. For example, why can’t we live happily ever after? Or why must life be as complicated as it is? Jokes are also aplenty in this hilarious comedy that sometimes borders on childishness. “I seek a fair and beautiful maiden.” “Don’t we all?”
The cast are also at their best, with Amy Adams portraying the delightful but confused Giselle, James Marsden as the brave but simple minded Price Edward, and also Patrick Dempsey who most people recognise as Dr. McDreamy of Grey’s Anatomy.Enchanted is certainly one of the most entertaining movies this year. Childish as it may be, it is full of fun for friends and family alike. A perfect holiday movie that will have most of the audience leaving with a smile on their face.
Rating 8.5/10
